Why Do People with ADHD Get Anxiety?

The Link Between ADHD and Anxiety

anxiety

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition where behavioral problems such as: hyperactivity, lack of attention, difficulty concentrating, fidgeting, forgetfulness, and lack of impulse control. The cause of ADHD is not clearly known, but it thought to be linked to genetics, environmental toxins, and premature birth. Contrary to what some believe, individuals that suffer from this disorder are usually of a high intelligence.

Anxiety is another mental disorder that causes people to feel distressed, uneasy, and overly frightened in stressful situations. Symptoms include insomnia, irritability, headaches, trouble controlling worry, and fear without an apparent cause. These symptoms can affect your work, school, relationships, and everyday activities. Anxiety also takes a toll on the health of your body at the same time, due to the stress that it produces that breaks down the immune system.

As far as the link between ADHD and anxiety, one does not cause the other. However, if you have ADHD, it is more likely that you will develop symptoms of anxiety than those that do not have ADHD. Unfortunately, when both of these disorders occur at the same time, they will exacerbate one another. Some of the symptoms overlap and it may be difficult to determine which disorder is actually occurring.

The key of determining which disorder is present is watching how the symptoms present over time. For instance, a child that has trouble concentrating during certain situations may have anxiety, but a child that can’t concentrate most of the time is probably suffering from ADHD.

Determining the significance of the events in context can give insight into the real disorder and what it can mean for the future of the individual. By looking into the situation and determining the actions that are occurring and the reasoning behind the actions, there may be some clear insight into the disorder that the individual has. There are natural ways to overcome the symptoms that these disorders display.
